BLF and Sonagazi Krishi Sramik Union jointly observed the International Mother Language Day 2017 in Central Shahid Minar of Sonagazi. Later a discussion meeting was arranged included agricultural workers, civil society representatives, local government personnel as well as community people and remembered the contributions of the activists. The speakers say mention that the right of language established and later we won independency but still the right of our poor villagers are not established and we have to fight for that.
International Mother Language Day originated as the international recognition of Language Movement Day, which has been commemorated in Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan) since 1952. Salam, Barkat, Rafiq, Jabbar and a few other brave sons of the soil were killed in police firings on this day in 1952 when students came out in processions from the Dhaka University campus defying section 144 to press home their demand for the recognition of Bangla as a state language of the then Pakistan.
This is the only event where people give their lives to keep the independence of using their mother language. To remember them there is a monument named Language Martyr’s Monument (Shahid Minar) in Dhaka University, Bangladesh.
