Bangladesh Labour Foundation (BLF) has organized a Round Table Seminar on “Towards LWG Certification: Challenges to ensure social Compliance in the tannery industry” at a hotel in the Capital Dhaka on December 23, 2020. The seminar was presided by the Chairman of BLF Mr. Abdus Salam Khan where MR K M Abdus Salam, Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment attended as Chief Guest. In the opening session a presentation was placed on Social Compliance in the Tannery Industry and its necessity to achieve LWG certification.
During his speech, the Chief Guest Mr. K M Abdus Salam emphasize to ensure the compliance in the Tannery Industrial Estate in Savar at the earliest where he mentioned that because of that Bangladesh has been losing global competition. He also mentioned Tannery Industrial Estate should comply the Leather Working Group compliance certification to expand its export to large buyer in EUROPE and USA. He advised that, a team should be formed consisting of Department of Labour, Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishment, BLF and other stakeholders by January 2021 to prepare an action plan for 2021 to ensure the social compliance in the Tannery factories.
The discussant expressed the necessity of the growth of the tannery industries by ensuring social compliance with the establishment of health, safety and security of the workers, freedom of workers, and implementation of minimum wages. The guests also added that, an audit should be conducted from now on to achieve the LWG certification at any cost within the specified time.
